TRAIL BLAZER late
winter 2007
(from the Sawyer County Record)

In the autumn 2006 issue of
the TrailBlazer, we did an On the Road feature which included a
visit to one of the true treasures of the Northwoods, Copper Falls
State Park.
For fans of Cooper Falls - and there are many! - there
are two new books of interest by Wisconsin author Mary J. Schueller.
"Rustic Reflection of Copper Falls State Park"
is actually an edited version of materials presented to the State
Historic Preservation Review Board which were used in nominating
the park for placement on the State Historic Register. The bid was
successful, and the park was also automatically placed on the National
Historic Register. This book contains a wealth of background and
historic information for those interested in the history of the
park.
Schueller's second book, "Soldiers of Poeerty,"
is a work the author describes as creative non-fiction. Her father,
Mike Kerkes, was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
company which did a great deal of work building and landscaping
Copper Falls State Park during the Great Depression, and the book
details Kerkes' life and work with the CCC, prior to and after arriving
at Copper Falls.
The book is filled with photographs and reproductions
of printed material such as newspaper articles from the period covered,
and illustrates the role of the CCC in rebuilding lives and infrastructure
during the Great Depression, a time when the faith of working Americans
in their nation and their way of life was deeply shaken.
Schuellers books are available at area Book World
stores. For more information to to www.rusticbooks.net
