Birth of a park

Dennis McCannI wrote recently of the successful effort in Mellen to add Copper Falls State Park to the state and national registers of historic places in recognition of the contributions of the Civilian Conservation Corps in building park buildings and visitor facilities.Visitors who want to learn more about the park's early years will find it in the newly published "Rustic Reflections of Copper Falls State Park" by Mary J. Schueller of Richfield, whose father served as a CCC carpenter at the park in the 1930s. "Rustic Reflections" (available for $9.95 from Rustic Books, www.rusticbooks.net) includes much of the history that was cited in the petitions for historic recognition, along with many photos of the CCC at work at Copper Falls.

The thousands of hikers, campers and nature enthusiasts who visit the park's offerings each year will appreciate them all the more for knowing how they came about.
